In Aberdeenshire, several miles south of Ballater, is Loch Muick. Accessible by a narrow, winding road that runs parallel to River Muick, it is a scenic area popular with hikers. The land is part of the Balmoral Estate and often visited by Queen Victoria. A hunting lodge known as Glas-allt Shiel was constructed on the northwest bank of the loch in 1868. The lodge and boathouses along the rocky shores of the loch make for interesting subjects. The glen itself is also stunning, covered in vibrant green foliage and purple heather (depending on the time of year), all overlooked by Lochnagar, one of Scotland's most impressive mountains. There is a path that circles the loch and trails that branch off, one of which is a popular approach to the summit of Lochnagar. Sandy beaches can also be found scattered along the shoreline.
