The ruins of Kilchurn castle are situated at the head of Loch Awe on a rocky peninsula. Constructed by the influential Clan Campbell in the 1400's, it served as their base for 150 years. Now it is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland. Another place I only had the chance to stop at briefly but intend to return to, when conditions are good. It's not surprising how popular of a location it is for photographers; the imposing hills behind the castle combined with the waters of Loch Awe make it a perfect place to shoot. If the wind is on your side (it wasn't on mine when I was there) the loch's surface will still, turning it into a mirror. Some dramatic lighting and the castle reflected in the loch is pretty much a photographer's dream.
