Castle Stalker

Castle Stalker was one of the stops I made during my 2-day road trip of the Scottish west coast. The castle has a long history, going back to the 1300s, and all the conflicts and drama that go with it. Unsurprisingly, it's a popular location for photographers. It is built upon a small island near the east bank of Loch Linnhe and is surrounded by the kind of scenic, hilly landscape you would expect to see when visiting the west coast. Because the Loch leads out into the ocean, the tide is something that should be considered as it may limit the compositions that you can achieve. When the tide goes out, an old railway track is revealed, leading out in the direction of the castle. Once used to transport supplies to the castle, it has now become part of a popular composition - drawing the eye of the viewer to the castle. After wandering along the beach for a while, searching for some more unique compositions, I captured a shot from a fair way down the beach looking back at the castle, past the stones and grasses. With a bit of post-processing I was able to really bring out the mood of the setting, which resulted in a final image I am very proud of.
