Glen Isla is a stunning valley on the west side of Angus and one of my favourite places to cycle. River Isla runs down through the Cairngorms into the glen where it is surrounded by imposing hills all the way down past the Loch of Lintrathen. Nestled in the hills at the northern end of Glen Isla is Forter Castle. Despite being an impressive historic Scottish castle in a scenic glen, it isn't as well-known as you would expect. It was restored in the late 1900's and is now a privately owned events space/accommodation for hire. That isn't a problem for photographers as the road goes right past it and it can be clearly seen from all over the glen. I drove up quite spontaneously one spring evening and the conditions looked pretty ideal. The sky was overcast but there were a few breaks in the cloud for sunlight to stream through, warmly illuminating the hillside. I managed to capture one of my favourite shots there: the hillside lit up in gold and green with the castle at the base of it, visible through the trees.
