A few miles south of Braemar is the impressive Callater Glen. The trail starts at a small gravel car park just off the main road and leads you through the hills of the Cairngorms for about 3 miles before reaching Loch Callater, tucked away in the surrounding glens. My only visit here was very spontaneous and didn't go as well as I had hoped. Expecting it to only take around 20-30mins to get to Loch Callater, I set off down the trail. It wasn't long before it became clear that I had underestimated the length of the trek, and the weather was also taking a turn for the worse. Despite that I decided to continue to the Loch, trying and ultimately failing to keep ahead of the signature Scottish downpour. When I eventually arrived at Loch Callater, the rain had more or less subsided. I was hoping for some breaks in the clouds to create a bit of dramatic lighting and there were a few, but they were too distant, lighting up the tops of hills far on the other side of the Loch. Soaking wet and feeling slightly defeated, I took a few shots from around the Loch's edge and began the walk back. This is definitely a location I would like to return to (properly prepared though), as it has good potential for some moody/dramatic captures with the right conditions.
